Bjorn Hansen was on the water from his earliest childhood days: at the age of four he secretly borrowed his sister‘s Opti Dinghy in order to go on a sailing trip. The early practice seems to have paid off, because shortly after that he celebrated his first success at the Spring Cup. He then sailed between the Åland Islands and on the Vänern, the largest lake in Sweden. Today he especially enjoys sailing the waters around Marstrand. He particularly enjoys looking back on his win in the 2007 GKSS Match Cup in Marstrand for this reason. The Swede also loves sailing on the Wannsee lake: For him, the BMW Berlin Match Race is not only a unique regatta, he is also looking forward to meeting with other sailors and together with them, round off the season with a thrilling competition.

Pierre-Antoine Morvan comes from Nantes, France. He learned to sail at the age of six in the Gulf of Morbihan. Then he sailed on a small class multihull, then on a Farr 30. He remembers well his first success in match racing which he celebrated at the Ameri’Cast Cup in Saint Cast. The list of his subsequent victories is long, he won not only the “Tour de France à la Voile” in 2008 and 2009, but also the “Internationaux de France” 2010. This season he won, among others, second place in the St. Moritz Match Race. Considering these successes it’s no wonder that Pierre-Antoine, when asked who he thinks is a good sailor, answers: a fast one. Privately he sails only in the Gulf of Morbihan, which since his childhood has been his favourite sailing spot.

Mads Ebler is from Vejle, a small fjord on the east coast of Jutland. His father, an enthusiastic sailor, taught him the basics of sailing when he was seven years old in an Optimist. The following summer the family spent a lot of time together on the water. The Danish sailor remembers his first success in an Optimist well. He then received a new sail and his first victory was assured. Since then Mads Ebler has always been excited by the many different factors which sailors have to consider in order to win a race. He has proven many times that he has mastered this art, most recently winning the Internationaux de France 2011 in Match Racing. But the Danish sailor also loves to sail outside of competitions and that’s why he spends every summer sailing with friends.

Staffan Lindberg comes from Mariehamn in the Åland Islands. His father and grandfather were sailors and he began sailing Optimists at the age of ten. Later he learned to master a large number of different boat classes, including the Laser, H-Boat, Soling and Star. He also drove 80 and 90 foot boats. He won his first medal in an H-boat, when he competed against 90 other boats in the Finnish H-Boat Championship and won the third. His partiality for different boat classes is as diverse as his understanding of good sailing areas: For him, each body of water has its own challenges, so that a good sailor must face the peculiarities of any particular sailing area anew each day. The Finn will be participating in the BMW Berlin Match Race this year for the tenth time.
He is pleased to be able to round off the 2011 season with a special regatta.

Eric Monnin was born in Zurich. He came into contact with sailing early through his family and learned the first steps on a Surprise yacht. Over time, he participated in many competitions together with his two brothers and his father. Since those days, sailing has been for him inextricably linked with his family. The Swiss sailor‘s favourite sailing area is Geneva Lake, though he has celebrated successes on many waters in the world. He particularly enjoys looking back on his first match race in which he defeated none other than Russell Coutts. For Eric Monnin, sailing is characterized not only by its complexity, but above all by teamwork. Especially during match races, the most important thing is working together as a crew and overcoming any weaknesses. He is happy to be returning this year to the BMW Berlin Match Race, because he likes the combination of competition, hospitality, parties and the city of Berlin.

Alvaro Marinho was born in Lisbon. His father and grandfather, both enthusiastic sailors, passed on their fascination for sailing sports in his early childhood. At the age of eight he sailed his Optimist on the Tejo river. At the age of nine he won his first regional regatta in this class. Since then the Portugese sailor has won many competitions, among others he won the silver medal in 2008 at the 470 world championship in Melbourne. This year he celebrated further success at the “Match Race France” and the Pre-Olympics “Sail for Gold” in Weymouth in 470 class. When match racing he lays value not only on teamwork, the intensity of a head-to-head race and the opportunity to prove himself in a competition, but also loves the feeling of being out in nature whilst sailing. In his free time the Portugese sailor loves to spend time with his children and cooking.

William Tiller is a Newzealander by birth. His family owned their own boat, so even in his early childhood he gained experience of sailing. He sailed all the classes of small dingy on the Hauraki Gulf, then joined the RNZYS Youth Training Program and keel boats. Since then William Tiller has successfully taken part in many regattas all over the world. He especially likes to look back on the Warren Jones International Youth Regatta 2010, during which he won against Phil Robertson in the final. The regatta was held in Perth, Australia. This location is one of the Newzealander’s favourite for sailing and he often sails there in his free time with friends. William Tiller will be taking part in the BMW Berlin Match Race for the first time. In the head-to-head races he particularly enjoys the intensity of the competition, a result of the short racing times. In this way all aspects of sailing can be decisive in winning.

Keith Swinton was born in Perth. The city lies on the Swan River on which his father taught him to sail on their small family yacht. At the age of ten he began taking part in Match Racing competitions and at once rose to the title of Club Champion with the Pelican Dinghy. Since then the australian has brought many titles back home. This year alone he won both the Chicago Match Race on Lake Michigan and the Sir Thomas Lipton Match Race in Spain. For Keith Swinton sailing isn’t only about success, he has also found many friends whilst discovering the most beautiful sailing waters in the world over the course of many trips. Last year he sailed on Berlin waters for the first time and enjoyed the fast and hard-fought J80 race. That’s why he’ll be at the starting line once again this year at the BMW Berlin Match Race.

Markus Wieser was taught passion for sailing while he was still in the cradle by his sailing enthusiast father. Aged just four years old his father taught him to sail on the Starnberger See. Together with his brother the sailor from Munich celebrated their first success at an early age, for example they won vice world champion title at the Vaurien Youth World Championship in 1977. His preferred boat classes are TP52, RC44 and Dragon class. Markus Wieser has masterd each of these classes in an extraordinary way, so that this year he won not only the title of vice european champion but also vice world champion in the Dragon class, to mention just a few of his many triumphs. After an exciting head-to-head race at the BMW Berlin Match Race 2010, Markus Wieser will now be hitting the start line for the 17th time at Berlin Wannsee.

Team Schümann (GER)
Jochen Schümann’s sailing career began in a self-made Optimist on Berlin‘s Müggelsee. Since those days he can look back on a long list of major victories. Notably, the gold medal in the Finn Dinghy in the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal as well as two Olympic victories in the Soling in 1988 in Pusan, South Korea, and in 1996 in Savannah, Georgia. For him, the thrill of sailing comes from the ever-changing complex challenges which any good sailor must master in order to achieve victory. Nevertheless, the Berliner also loves private sailing and in his scarce free time he also likes to ski, cycle, climb and play golf. Jochen Schümann is looking forward to reconnecting with friends from 19 years of exceptional match-race history at this year's BMW Berlin Match Race.

Nicolai Sehested comes from Kolding in Denmark. At the age of ten his uncle, an avid sailor, taught him the first steps on an Optimist on the Kolding Fjord. Over time he graduated from the Optimist to an E-dinghy. After only eight months in this class, he won the Danish National Championships. When sailing, the Dane especially appreciates the possibility of being able to continually improve by adapting to new circumstances. For him, sailing is also always a team effort. The young sailor passes on this knowledge in his spare time to his students: He trains young sailors in Optimists and E-dinghies. He also studies at the Copenhagen Business School. He and his young team participate in mainly grade 2 events all over Europe. The BMW Berlin Match Race is, as a Grade 1 event, a great way to live up to the challenge and gain experience.

Team Kemmling (GER)
Carsten Kemmling, from Duisburg, began his sailing career at the tender age of six, classically in an Optimist. At this time his father was buiding up his sailing club in Duisburg and thus brought his son onto the water. And with success! Carsten Kemmling stayed on board and changed to the 420 class, Laser Standard and FD. He also grew interested in coaching and became Opti state coach in NRW. His first sailing success was gaining eleventh place in the Opti of a German championship. Warnemünde is one of his favorite stomping grounds. So far, he has become German Champion three times in a Match Race. In the FD and Laser boat classes, he won second place in the Olympic elimination rounds. Although he also likes sailing on boats in the J 80 class, the Laser Standard is one of his favorite classes. Carsten Kemmling qualified for the BMW Berlin Match Race in the Qualifier, a Grade-3 event, held by the Berlin Yacht Club two weeks ago. A perfect sailor is marked out for Kemmling mainly by his good risk management. In match racing he is fascinated most by the close race, the high level coupled with little effort. Despite the tension and athleticism of regatta sailing, he also enjoys cosy cruising trips with his family every year, where he can relax completely.
